The video is a brief account of my visit to, encounters with and interventions in areas near the Bay of Bengal in Odisha affected by environmental disaster. Since the ‘1999 Super Cyclone’, the state of Odisha is facing a surge of cyclones and tsunamis, almost ritualistically every year. Rural landscapes are rapidly changing not only due to these crises, but the way new communication technology, public policies and individuals are addressing the question of environment or nature itself. The rapid circulation of images of environmental disasters on social media creates a sense of pre-mature apocalypse in our collective psyche. The project Rice Hunger Sorrow speculates on these emerging apocalyptic post-disaster landscapes, livelihood struggles, the loss of culture and environmental degradation.
